European Union pledges about $70 million in additional aid to Gaza

The European Union on Friday announced its intention to provide an additional 68 million euros ($73 million) in emergency aid to the Gaza Strip, which is witnessing a fierce war between Israel and Hamas.

A statement issued by the bloc said, "In light of the worsening acute humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the ever increasing needs on the ground, the Commission has decided to increase its funding to support Palestinians affected by the ongoing war."

The European Union said in its statement that "this support brings the Union's total humanitarian assistance to vulnerable Palestinians in Gaza and the region to €193 million in 2024".

He revealed that the new aid will focus on food, clean water, sanitation and shelter and will be channelled through local partners working on the ground.

The United Nations said Israel's military operation had turned the Strip into a "humanitarian hell" amid fears of imminent famine.

The European Union and the United States stepped up pressure on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza.

On Thursday, the U.S. Army announced the start of construction of a naval pier to facilitate the delivery of aid to the territory, where more than six years of war have caused widespread destruction and devastation.

The unprecedented attack by the Islamic Resistance Movement on Israeli territory on Oct. 7 killed 1,170 people, most of them civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse count based on official Israeli data.

In response, Israel vowed to "eliminate" Hamas, in power in Gaza since 2007, and launched an assault that has so far killed 34,356 people, most of them civilians, according to the Hamas Health Ministry.
