The first strike by Samsung workers in South Korea

Workers at giant technology company Samsung Electronics in South Korea staged the company's first-ever strike on Friday, according to the head of the largest union representing tens of thousands of them, Agence France-Presse reported.

Samsung Electronics is one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers and also one of the only companies in the world that produces advanced memory chips used in generative artificial intelligence, including advanced artificial intelligence devices.

Management at the company, which is the world's largest producer of memory chips, has been in negotiations with the union over wages since January, but the two sides have not reached a resolution.

The company said in a statement that "there will be no impact on production and business operations. The strike involves workers at the company's headquarters, not those on the production lines, and will last one day.

This is the first strike at the giant technology company.

About a dozen workers staged a protest outside Samsung's headquarters in Seoul on Friday, chanting, "Respect the workers!"
