China evacuates over 400,000 in Hainan province as Typhoon Yagi approaches

Authorities in the southern Chinese city of Hainan have evacuated more than 419,000 people as Typhoon Yagi approaches, the official Xinhua news agency reported Friday.

China is bracing for what could be the strongest storm to hit the country's southern coast in a decade. Yagi is expected to make landfall on Hainan, a popular tourist destination, on Friday afternoon, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.

Yagi killed 13 people in the Philippines earlier this week and caused flooding and landslides on the country's main island of Luzon.

On Thursday, the Department of Water Resources raised the emergency level to three for flooding in the two provinces.

"Yagi is likely to be the strongest typhoon to hit China's southern coast since 2014, making flood control work extremely difficult," the agency said after a meeting of flood control officials.
