EU launches WTO proceedings to challenge Chinese dairy probe

Brussels on Monday launched a World Trade Organization (WTO) procedure to challenge Beijing's investigation into EU dairy products, which China launched after Brussels announced additional tariffs on Chinese electric car imports.

"Today, the Commission launched a request for consultations with the WTO to challenge China's initiation of an anti-subsidy investigation into imports of certain dairy products from the EU," the European Commission said in a statement.

The request for consultations is the first step in the WTO dispute settlement procedure.

The EU hopes to protect the auto sector, which employs 14.6 million workers.

The European Commission believes that China's investigation into EU dairy products has no "factual basis". Brussels intends to "firmly defend" European interests against "arbitrary measures".
