China announces production of the world's largest offshore wind turbine

China's Dongfang Electric Group has announced the construction of the world's largest offshore wind turbine, according to Bloomberg News.

The company said in a statement that it had produced a 26-megawatt offshore wind turbine, 31 per cent larger than the largest turbine previously produced, which had a capacity of 18 megawatts, and more powerful than the largest turbine whose production plans have been revealed.

Bloomberg News reported that manufacturers are trying to increase the capacity of offshore turbines to cut costs by producing more electricity with fewer units.

It added that companies still need to lower prices because the cost of wind power technology is still higher than that of electricity generated from fossil fuels such as coal in most parts of the world.

Chinese turbine manufacturers face stiff competition from other companies and have broken turbine capacity records several times in recent years.
