49 killed in Israeli raids on Lebanon

The Lebanese Health Ministry announced on Sunday that 49 people had been killed in Israeli raids on the south and east of the country, 24 of them in a single raid, as Israel intensified its attacks since Monday, including on the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The ministry said in a statement that "the Israeli enemy's raids on Baalbek-Hermel" in eastern Lebanon "resulted, according to preliminary figures, in the martyrdom of 21 people and the wounding of 47 others".

An Agence France-Presse correspondent reported heavy raids in the Baalbek area on Sunday.

The National News Agency reported that neighbourhoods in the city of Baalbek, one of the largest cities in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, and surrounding villages were subjected to "about 15 raids" on Sunday.

The ministry said in another statement that "the Israeli enemy's attack on Ain al-Delb", east of the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon, "resulted, according to preliminary figures, in the martyrdom of 24 people and the wounding of 29 others".

The National News Agency, for its part, reported that "an air strike targeted a building" in the area near Sidon, about 40 kilometres from the capital Beirut.

The ministry also reported that four people were killed in an Israeli air strike that targeted the town of Jeb Jannine in the western Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon.

The ministry had earlier said that 14 medics had been killed in two days in the ongoing Israeli bombardment, and condemned Israel's targeting of health centres.

Since Monday, areas in southern and eastern Lebanon, up to the southern suburbs of Beirut, have come under heavy Israeli bombardment, killing hundreds and forcing many to flee their homes.
