United Nations: Half of Sudan's population is facing severe hunger

The United Nations World Food Program said on Sunday that the continuation of the war in Sudan for more than 500 days has exposed half of the population to severe hunger, in the first confirmed famine in the world since 2017.

This came in a post by the World Food Program on its account on the (X) platform.

The program explained that "there is no time to waste, and humanitarian access and funding remain critical."

The World Food Program announced, the day before yesterday, Friday, the entry of food aid to West Darfur, with the aim of combating the threat of famine in Sudan, noting that it was able to enter trucks carrying one hundred tons through the Adre border crossing with Chad.

The population of Sudan is about 49.5 million people, according to the latest unofficial estimates.

The food and health disasters coincide with the ongoing suffering due to the fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, which has led to the displacement of more than 10.7 million people, according to United Nations reports, while the number of refugees abroad has reached about 2.3 million people, with children making up 50 percent of the internally displaced.
