About 100 killed in fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria

At least 94 people were killed and 50 injured when a fuel tanker exploded in northern Nigeria, police said Wednesday.

Many of the victims were trying to collect fuel that spilled onto the road after the tanker crashed late Tuesday in the northern state of Jigawa, police spokesman Lawan Chiisu Adam told AFP.

He said the tanker had tried to avoid colliding with a truck in the town of Majia.

"We have confirmed so far that 94 people have been killed and about 50 injured," he said.

After the accident, residents gathered around the vehicle as they tried to collect the spilled fuel, Adam said.

He said police had difficulty stopping the crowd.

The Nigerian Medical Association urged doctors to rush to nearby emergency rooms to help as victims poured in.

Fuel tanker explosions are common in Africa's most populous country, where many roads are poor and residents often loot fuel after accidents.
