German Thomas Tuchel is close to coaching the English national team

Thomas Tuchel is to take over as England manager after reaching an agreement with the Football Association, according to reports in both England and Germany on Tuesday.

The Times, Sky Sports, the BBC and German newspaper Bild all reported that Tuchel, 51, would be appointed as the Three Lions' new manager, replacing Gareth Southgate, who resigned after the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the European Championship final last summer.

The FA declined to comment on the reports, but said chief executive Mark Bullingham would reveal details at Wembley on Wednesday, when the new manager is expected to be officially announced.

Tuchel was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain (2018-2020) and Bayern Munich (2023-2024), winning domestic titles, and before that Borussia Dortmund (2015-2017), which he led to the domestic cup.

His greatest success remains with Chelsea, who signed him months after he was sacked by the French capital's club, and he led them to a treble of the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2021, before being sacked the following year.

His next stop was Bayern, where he won the league for the 11th time in the club's history, but the following year the Bavarian giants finished third in the Bundesliga and out of the domestic cup and Champions League for the first time in 12 years, leading to his departure.

When he officially takes over, Tuchel will inherit a star-studded England squad led by striker Harry Kane, who he brought to Bayern last season, as well as Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham and others.

Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Bayern, but he is now in the running to become only the third foreign manager in England's history.

Under Southgate, England have reached the final of the last two European Championships, not to mention the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Lee Carsley was appointed as Southgate's interim successor in August last year, specifically to take charge of the team in the European Nations League, which runs over three international seasons.

The 50-year-old, who stepped down as England U-21 boss, has been ambivalent about taking over the reins permanently.

In four matches in charge of England, Carsley has won three and suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley last week.

England have long had a reputation for not hiring foreign coaches, so Carsley suggested that the job should be given to the best candidate, regardless of nationality.

Only two foreign coaches have ever led England, the late Swiss Sven-Goran Eriksen (2001-2006) and Italian Fabio Capello (2007-2012).

"We have seen in the past that there are different nationalities in charge of the team. The best candidate should get the job," said Carsley.

"I think we're going to be in trouble if we don't do that and show openness to the issue."
