Lucian Freud painting sells for $17.07 million at London auction

A painting by Lucian Freud sold for £13.9 million ($17.07 million) at Christie's in London on Wednesday.

The painting, entitled 'Ria, Nude Portrait', was the main item at the auction for the first time and sold for £13.89 million including expenses.

Painted by Freud between 2006 and 2007, it is a "late masterpiece" by the artist and has been in the same collection since it was completed, Anne A. Touzan of Christie's told AFP.

It is "the first time it has come to market", she added.

There has been growing interest in the work of Freud, who died in 2011 aged 88 and was considered one of Britain's most prominent portrait painters.

Freud, the grandson of the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, was known for his self-portraits and paintings of naked women with sagging breasts or round bellies.

"He didn't want to idealise the body, he really tried to paint people as they were," said Anna Tozan.

She said the "honesty" of his depictions of the body helped make him one of the most sought-after artists on the art market.

In 2022, his painting "Large Interior W11" sold for more than $86 million, a record. In 2015, his painting "Benefits Supervisor Resting" sold for more than $56 million.

The Christie's auction also included another Freud painting, "Head of a Woman", which sold for £4.18 million ($5.47 million).

Works by Marc Chagall, Bert Morizot, Willem de Kooning and Jeff Koons also sold.
